1. About IEC publications

An IEC reference number for a publication is composed of a header plus three elements: 1) the publication number, 2) the part number and 3) the section number.

As from 1997 all new IEC publications and parts, as well as new editions, revisions and amendments are being issued with a designation in the 60000 series, however this does not affect the content. It is now necessary to add 60000 to the existing base number.

Example: IEC 529 is now referenced as IEC 60529.

The 80000 series is allocated to multipart standards jointly developed by IEC and ISO in some exceptional cases, in which some parts are published by ISO and others by IEC. The use of the ISO/IEC prefix is strictly limited to ISO/IEC JTC1 publications as well as some ISO/IEC guides.

IEC publications are bilingual (English/French) or monolingual, some versions are derived from the bilingual publication by deleting the French-language or English-language pages as appropriate. Most publications are also available in Spanish and some in Russian.

The following letter codes denote the available language(s) for each publication:

EN-FR bilingual (English/French)
EN English only
FR French only
ES Spanish
RU Russian
EN-FR-RU trilingual (English/French/Russian)

The International Electrotechnical Commission is the leading global organization that publishes consensus-based international standards and manages conformity assessment systems for electric and electronic products, systems and services, collectively known as electrotechnology.

The IEC develops different types of publications:

The IEC Central Office has introduced “Series packages” for a limited selection of bestselling standards. Each package includes all parts of the series and amendments where needed.

A 15% discount of the total catalogue price is included.

You will find here the list of series available.

The IEC publishes consolidated versions of its publications with all the amendments included in the base document.

Edition 1.0 base document without any amendments
Edition 1.1 base 1.0 edition consolidated with one amendment
Edition 1.2 base 1.0 edition consolidated with two amendments
Edition 2.0 second edition of a base document.
This may include new information combined as well as amendments from edition 1.x.
Edition 2.1 second edition consolidated with one amendment

Since May 2010, additions and deletions are displayed in red, with deletions being struck through in all new consolidated versions. Since May 2012, the release of the consolidated version is strictly synchronized with that of the amendment.

I have edition 1.2, do I have to buy amendments?

There is no need to buy the amendments because they are already included in the consolidated version.
If you have the base edition (1.0, 2.0, 3.0,…) of a standard, you may purchase amendments separately.

A technical corrigendum is issued to correct either:

  • A technical error or ambiguity in an International Standard, a Technical Specification, a Publicly Available Specification or a Technical Report, inadvertently introduced either in drafting or in printing and which could lead to incorrect or unsafe application of the publication, or
  • Information that has become outdated since publication, provided that the modification has no effect on the technical normative elements of the standard.

Once published corrigenda are immediately integrated in the corresponding publication. They are also available separately and can be freely downloaded here.

Electropedia contains all the terms and definitions in the International Electrotechnical Vocabulary or IEV which is published also as a set of publications in the IEC 60050 series that can be ordered separately from the IEC Webstore.

Electropedia is the world's most comprehensive online electrical and electronic terminology database containing more than 20 000 terms and definitions in English and French organized by subject area, with equivalent terms in various other languages: Arabic, Chinese, Czech, Finnish, German, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian (Bokmål and Nynorsk), Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Serbian, Slovenian, Spanish and Swedish (coverage varies by subject area).

An interpretation sheet provides a quick formal explanation to an urgent request by a user of a standard (testing laboratory, manufacturer, etc.). Changes of requirements or test procedures in a standard by means of an interpretation sheet shall be avoided. It is recognized that it is sometimes difficult to define what is a "matter of interpretation" for a given standard.

For more information please refer to ISO/IEC Directives.

All the Interpretation sheets can be freely downloaded here.

IEC Publications are generally available in paper and PDF electronic format, but the ones with over 300 pages are provided on CD instead of paper.

On our Webstore, you can find out the document format available for publications of your choice.

The following format symbols are used on our Webstore:

Portable Document Format (Adobe Acrobat Reader)
CD / DVD / Blu-ray ™
Ebooks (PDF, ePub)
Word (only for TRF)

For customers wishing to purchase a large quantity of standards we can deliver on CD.

A Redline version contains both the current IEC standard and a Redline version of the document which shows changes from the previous edition marked in colour. With the Redline you can quickly spot changed sections and tell specifically what has been changed from the previous edition, saving time and avoiding confusion.

The development of a Redline version is not systematic. Criteria are the popularity of the Publication and the clear structure of the changes. If the changes are too much interwoven into the content, a Redline version may be unreadable and thus, lose the benefit of a clear and quick identification of the changes.

  • 2. Search and find publications

The search results mention a Stability date for some publications. The contents of the publications will remain unchanged up to the Stability date. At this date, the publication will be either reconfirmed, withdrawn, replaced by a revised edition or amended. If there is a revision or amendment on-going then this is mentioned under the publication in the “Work in progress” tab, if you don't see this tab it means that there is no project under development.

Stability periods are based on an assessment of the maturity of the technology and future, foreseen changes due to development or maintenance of associated publications. Typically stability periods are between 3 and 12 years. If a committee needs to process an amendment or revision before the review date, it may decide to advance the review date and modify the stability date accordingly.

Several publications are available in database format. You will find the complete list here

For some of them the access is on an annual subscription basis and is by means of a username and password.

The IEC Central Office cannot sell or send out working documents because they are still in the project stage and modifications may overcome.

You may also subscribe to our free e-mail service Just Published which is sent out once a month and lists all newly published standards.

We also suggest you to contact the IEC National Committee in your country, who may be able to give you the information on the projects.

The corporate account facility has been designed for companies who regularly purchase standards on the IEC Webstore. It is therefore not meant for one off purchases.

To benefit from this service you pay in advance either by credit card or bank transfer a minimum of CHF 2'000.- and you get an extra credit of 15% on the amount paid. Upon payment you receive a login and password allowing you to download IEC publications on our website. All the costs of your future orders will be automatically deducted from your account.

For example if you pay CHF 2’000.- you will be able to download up to CHF 2’300.- worth of publications. You can then place several orders for as many publications as you require, as long as the total does not exceed the credit limit. The system does not allow you to place an order if the publication price exceeds the remaining credit in your account.

You will receive an invoice receipt when your corporate account is set up, and a statement of account on a monthly basis that lists all the orders placed through our Webstore and shows the balance remaining on your account. If no orders have been placed in a particular month, no statement will be sent. You can reload your account (again for a minimum of CHF 2'000.-) if your credit is not large enough to buy new publications.

In order to continue benefitting from this service, a minimum of 2 purchases per calendar year is required. If a corporate account remains inactive for an extended period of time, the IEC reserves the right to close the corporate account.

If you wish to open/reload a corporate account please send an email to, including the following details:

    • Company name and name/email address of person to be responsible for the account
    • Address
    • Telephone
    • The sum that you wish to credit to your account

We will then send you a pro forma with payment details

Our on-line payment facility is a secured environment. We use 128-bit encryption key over Secure Socket Layer (SSL) to provide the highest level of security.

In efforts to prevent credit card fraud, we do ask for your CVC/CVV, which is your security code found on the back of your card.

    5. Others

Other entities and/or organizations can adopt IEC standards to which they have the possibility of adding changes. However, we are not necessarily informed of those changes/modifications. Please therefore contact the organisation that has published the standard in question.

The IEC runs four conformity assessment systems, each of which operates schemes based on third-party conformity assessment certification. Together they establish that a product is reliable and meets expectations in terms of performance, safety, efficiency, durability and other criteria.

IECEE: IEC System of Conformity Assessment Schemes for Electrotechnical Equipment and Components.

IECEx: IEC System for Certification to Standards relating to Equipment for use in Explosive Atmospheres.

IECQ: IEC Quality Assessment System for Electronic Components.

IECRE: IEC System for Certification to Standards Relating to Equipment for Use in Renewable Energy Applications

If you have questions, you will need to choose the right conformity assessment scheme for your products. Please click here for more information.

We are the Central Office of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that prepares and publishes international standards for all electrical, electronic and related technologies.

Although some 90% of European standards are identical or very closely based on IEC international standards, if you are interested in a specific EN reference or other European standards, you should contact CENELEC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization).

You don't need to be an IEC member to purchase IEC standards, you can place an order directly on our Webstore.

IEC membership is only open to countries and not to regional organizations, companies or individuals. An IEC member is called a National Committee and each NC represents its nation's electrotechnical interests in IEC management and standardization work.

If you wish to participate in the development and elaboration of IEC standards, please get in touch with the IEC National Member Body in your country, who will give you further information. Please click here to get the contact details.

Please also check the related information.

The ISO/IEC Guide 21-1 provides the methods for adoption of IEC International Standards as regional or national standards and includes a system for indicating the degree of correspondence so as to promote coherence in the way regional or national standards bodies adopt international standards and indicate the degree of correspondence with international standards. It applies equally to the adoption of other international normative and informative documents such as technical reports. Greater uniformity in the indication of both correspondence and deviations among countries will aid communication, avoid confusion and facilitate trade.

You cannot use the IEC logo as a mark to confirm that your product follow our standards. You should use the certification body logo instead (SGS, TUV,...).

Our attention has been drawn to a number of references “IEC 61216” being used in the solar photovoltaics (PV) industry, more particularly in the field of certification.

IEC Central Office wishes to make clear that it has never issued an international standard (or any other publication) under the reference “IEC 61216”, neither in the PV field, nor in any other field.

The standard to be used in the field of solar photovoltaics is IEC 61215: 2005, Crystalline silicon terrestrial photovoltaic (PV) modules - Design qualification and type approval.

IEC 61215 is being revised; in its new edition (expected to be published in 2016) it will be available as a series of standards, under references IEC 61215-1, IEC 61215-1-1, IEC 61215-1-2, IEC 61215-1-3, IEC 61215-1-4, IEC 61215-2.

To help bring electrical energy to some of the 1,3 billion people without access or with only limited energy access, the IEC, World Bank Group and United Nations Foundation have a cooperative agreement to provide developing countries with access to important technical documents that support rural electrification, at a specially discounted price.

The IEC Technical Specification 62257 series Recommendations for small renewable energy and hybrid systems for rural electrification outlines international best practice solutions to support energy access in developing countries across a range of technologies. The three organizations are cooperating to offer discounts to qualified stakeholders purchasing documents in the IEC TS 62257 series.

The IEC 62257 series contains numerous technical specifications which address three main topics – introduction to rural electrification; project management and implementation guidelines; and technical specifications for components and systems. The IEC TS 62257 series also provides assistance to the project implementer, with information on how to select the right product based on what is available in their local market, product tests to be performed under the local future field conditions, and technical and economic aspects of equipment, skills required etc.

The details of the available discounts are:
75 % discount on IEC TS 62257-9-5 (with or without all normative references)
58% discount on entire IEC TS 62257 series + all normative references
50% discount on any other individual documents in the IEC TS 62257 series (with or without normative references)
